Duane Morris energy partner and chair of the firm鈥檚 Washington, D.C., office,听Sheila Slocum Hollis听(Jour鈥71) was elected to be a 2012 Fellow of The American College of Environmental Lawyers. Sheila practices in the areas of energy transactional and regulatory law and international and administrative law before government agencies, Congress and other entities. She was named one of 50 Key Women in energy worldwide and received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement in energy in Platt鈥檚 Global Energy Awards. Sheila lives in Washington, D.C.

In 104 days beginning last May,听Jon Turk听(PhDChem鈥71) completed, by kayak, foot and skis, the world鈥檚 first circumnavigation of Ellesmere, the northernmost island of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The author and scientist completed the 1,500-mile adventure with a 26-year-old photographer, and the pair endured harsh weather conditions and long days of paddling. For their endeavor, they were nominated as adventurers of the year by听National Geographic. Jon lives in Darby, Mont., and is a grandfather of six.

The United States Tennis Association named听Richard Berman听(Mktg鈥71) recipient of the 2011 Arthur Ashe Award. He received the recognition for his contributions to the growth of tennis, specifically among students in wheelchairs, and for his involvement with the Colorado Wheelchair Foundation. The Boulder resident teaches tennis to people of all skill levels at Rich鈥檚 Tennis School.

Last year听Anne Johnson Randolph听(Art鈥71) became vice president of the Tecumseh Land Trust, which covers two counties in Ohio and has preserved more than 20,000 acres of farmland, riparian areas and forest. She lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and writes that she fondly remembers all of her Kappa friends.

At the Wordharvest鈥檚 Tony Hillerman Writers Conference in Santa Fe, N.M.,听Sherida Stewart鈥檚 (Edu鈥71) story 鈥淭urquoise Remembrance鈥 won the Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story Contest and was published in the February issue of听New Mexico Magazine. She became a writer after a few years of teaching elementary and preschool children. Her son听Eric Stewart听(Psych鈥09) is executive director of the Health Outreach to Latin America Foundation in Boulder. Sherida and her husband live in Farmington, N.M.

After 36 years听Richard Rundell听(PhDGer鈥71) retired from New Mexico State University. Most recently, he was head of the languages and linguistics department. He lives in Las Cruces, N.M., and says it is hard to believe 40 years have passed since he finished his doctorate.

For their 50th wedding听anniversary,听搁辞产别谤迟听罢补耻苍迟听(PolSci鈥72) and听Leanna Olson-Taunt (Psych鈥73) took a听nostalgic trip to the SM调教所听Boulder campus in May听2023. They visited their听old residence, Kittredge听Commons, where they听met during their time听at SM调教所. 鈥淭here are so听many changes, yet the听old campus feeling听was still there,鈥 Robert听wrote. Leanna is retired听from teaching psychology and serving as the听general studies department head at Western听Technical College in听La Crosse, Wisconsin,听where the couple lives.听In 2022, Robert published a two-volume听book,听The War Eagle听Years, Steamboating on听the Upper Mississippi听River 1854-1870, which听tells the history of the听steamboat 鈥淲ar Eagle,"听a well-known boat of the听1860s that burned and听sank in 1870 and still lies听on the river bottom in La听Crosse. Robert retired in听2014 as county personnel听director with La Crosse听County after 30 years.听

They banded together in a faux fraternity they dubbed the 鈥淲EW鈥 鈥 鈥淲est East鈥檚 Wing of Arnett Hall.鈥 After a long separation, in the early 2000s they found out that all except Paul (who lives in Portland) once again lived in the Denver-Boulder area. WEW began getting together regularly to rehash campus memories, analyze Buffalo athletics and discuss the state of world affairs.

Distinguished professor of political science at Lehigh University Laura Katz Olson (MPolSci鈥72; PhD鈥74) is the author of Ethically Challenged: Private Equity Storms Healthcare, published last year by John Hopkins University Press. Recipient of the 2022 North American Book Award and the 2023 Axiom Best Business Book Award, Ethically Challenged examines the private equity industry鈥檚 impact on our health-care system. With a focus on cost and quality of care, Laura investigates the industry鈥檚 tactics, including piling debt on investment targets and heavily charging enterprises with fees while collecting dividends for themselves. Laura has been a Social Security administration scholar, a Gerontological Fellow, a Fulbright Scholar and a recipient of the Charles A. McCoy Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Political Science Association.

Tired of听observing the听expansive litter problem听on Oklahoma鈥檚 Interstate听40, 鈥淪uper Doc鈥 叠谤补诲听骋补谤产别谤 (Bio鈥72) decided听to become part of the听solution. Every Friday,听Garber leaves his city听job as a plastic and听reconstructive surgeon听and heads to his family听farm in the country.听There, he dons his red听hat, yellow-and-orange听vest, 55-gallon black bag听and pincher robotic tool听to pick up trash along听Interstate 40 and US听Highway 75 South. His听motto for the area is 鈥淭he听cleanest, greenest exit on听eastbound I-40 coast to听coast.鈥 He lives in Tulsa.

Artist Barbara Takenaga (Art鈥72; MFA鈥78) creates swirling, kaleidoscopic abstract paintings through use of acrylic paint. Barbara received a 2020 Guggenheim fellowship and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an honors society that promotes excellence in the arts. Both her independent and group work has been exhibited throughout the country, including in New York, Colorado, California and Maine. Her work was last exhibited at the Robischon Gallery in lower downtown Denver. She lives in New York City.听

In April, Steven Gardner鈥檚 (PreMed) book, Jabberwocky: Lessons of Love from a Boy Who Never Spoke, was released on Amazon. His story chronicles the life-changing experience that Steven and his son Graham, who had cerebral palsy and died at age 22, had at a 鈥渕agical summer camp for kids with disabilities...where hope flourishes and playfulness prevails.鈥 Steven is an internist at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Barbara Valent (Chem; PhD鈥78) was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for her study of wheat blast disease at Kansas State University. Wheat blast is a fungus capable of destroying entire fields that has been found in low and middle income countries around the world, where wheat is often the primary source of protein. Barbara has led a research team that has studied how the fungus works, which can help with containment and keep it from spreading to the U.S.

Over the past four decades, Gail has worked in U.S. national security and intelligence in Europe, South Asia and the Middle East. He lives in Boulder.听

Longtime Boulder resident Jeanne Winer鈥檚 (Engl;Law鈥77) book Her Kind of Case received starred re- views from Kirkus, Library Journal and Booklist. The novel, which takes place in Boulder and Denver, centers on Lee Isaacs, a female attorney who defends a young man accused of helping kill a gay gang member. Jeanne was a criminal defense lawyer in Colorado for 35 years. She鈥檚 received national attention for her work in Romer v. Evans, a landmark civil rights case that laid the foundation for the 2015 Obergefell decision, which legalized same-sex marriage throughout the U.S. Like the heroine in her book, Jeanne is a martial artist who holds a third-degree black belt in taekwondo. She lives mainly in Boulder with her partner and cat,听but spends a number of months each year writing in Taos, N.M.

Since leaving Boulder,听Cathy Crosby听(MPhil)听writes that her professional career has included working at the Los Angeles Crime Lab as a senior criminalist and as a chemistry teacher at Santa Monica College. In 2015, she published the book听A Good Catholic Girl: Pro-choice IS Pro-life. She teaches science to her granddaughters and other little ones at Hidden Gems, her daughter鈥檚 pre-K school in L.A.
